My introduction to the American Sandwich
By Micksy Micksadolopolous
Ah sandwiches. Being from the Land Down Under, I guess I didn't truly know what a sandwich was growing up. I always thought it was a couple of pieces of bread, some margarine and some vegemite, maybe peanut butter on a good day.. Alas, my arrival in the US of A has led me to learn otherwise. It's more a meal of meat, veg and salad, wedged between two pieces of bread that barely cover the content. Obviously the next time I see my mother, I'll be informing her just how short changed I feel about all that black, yeast extract being force fed to me. Who knew you could ask for Chicken, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, Mayonaisse, mustard, pickles and whatever else took your liking. I mean sure, I grew up with very normal proportions, could climb trees and run fast, but crikey, I would have liked to have been offered the indulgent alternative. So, suffice it to say my introduction to the world of American sandwiches has been an emotional roller-coaster ride. The joy of so many flavours jammed between two pieces of bread, the sadness of all the childhood years of tastebud mediocrity, the joy of being able to see my feet at 21, the sadness ofnot being able to rest my sandwich on my belly at 21, the joy of finding out you really can eat a pound of roast beef at Carnegie's without having a heart attack, the sadness of realising I now need to plump for several new pairs of pants.....I don't know how to feel, I've very conflicted... But in close, cheers to the American Sandwich, you had me at "what sort of cheese would you like"....there's more than one? |

I enjoyed reading your extended discovery of the sandwich. If only my mom knew sandwiches would have been consumed more often than those hugh meals. My siblings and I did not like meat until we were well past a dozen years. We collectively had issues with eating friends of "Old McDonald Had a Farm" e i ~ e i ~ O
